Genesis of an Idea

Genesis of an Idea
One of Martha’s most difficult moments occurred when, following her mastectomy surgery two years ago, the nurse told her she could get dressed to go home. “Like all breast surgery patients, I had drains coming out of my incisions. I could not figure out how to get dressed! I was a post-op wreck. My daughter had the great idea of clipping the drains to this funky pearl necklace, complete with pink bow, I had brought with me to the hospital to liven-up what was sure to be a pretty gloomy event in my life.” Proclaimed as the most resourceful and “classy” solution to a common patient dilemma by her plastic surgeon, Martha began making similar necklaces for women she knew facing surgery. The Remember Beads™ Project was born.

For the last six months, Martha has been honing her idea. Wanting to address both the needs of recovering surgery patients and the critical piece of early detection, she developed two separate designs. The signature four pearl beads, strung in increasing size on brightly colored ribbons, represent a simple and tactile way of increasing awareness and educating women about the importance of breast self-examination and annual mammograms.

Remember Beads™, strung on an 18” ribbon, are decorative and can be hung on a car mirror, doorknob, or just about anywhere. “The beauty of the beads is that they are more than just a symbol. They can be used not only to increase awareness about the disease, but they are actually a very simple teaching tool that healthcare practitioners, indeed anyone, can use to educate patients or the people they love about breast cancer.” Martha brought them with her to all her appointments where they served her well as worry beads while waiting.

Remember Beads™ Necklaces, strung on a 45” ribbon and available in numerous colors, are decorative fashion accessories that provides a concrete way to remind you or someone you care about to do regular breast self-examinations and to schedule yearly mammograms.

Remember Beads™ Lanyards, strung on a 45" necklace-length ribbon, include a break-away fastener and are to be worn by health care workers or anyone who needs to wear an ID badge. Remember Beads™ Lanyards provide a concrete way to share information with patients about early detection and self-examination.

Recovery Beads™ Lanyards, strung on a 45” ribbon, are to be worn by patients during their first two weeks of recovery until the drains are removed. In addition to being a useful post-op tool, the Recovery Beads™ Lanyards provide the patient with a concrete way to share information about their own cancer and the message that early detection is key to survival.

The message is very powerful. You tell the story as you touch each bead.
